A Vision for Sport Development
In December of 2017, City Council approved the document “A Vision for Sport Development”. This proposed framework includes five themes: Athlete, coach and officials development, Physical Literacy, Sport System Sustainability (Community Engagement) and Sport Tourism.
The sport development team at the Pan Am Centre is committed to providing improved quality of sport and to linking local Markham sport groups to Provincial and National Sport Organizations to align local programming. We follow the principles established by the Sport for Life Society and its Long Term Athlete Development model.

We are making tremendous progress on our plan! Here’s a view of how we did in 2019:
Development of athletes, coaches and officials
Athlete Development
The Sport Development Unit partners community sport organizations on all things related to athlete development, including delivering workshops on topics such as concussion, nutrition, sport psychology, and other sport science and sport medicine services. The Sport Development Unit also works with various sport organizations to tell athlete stories.

In partnership with the Coaches Association of Ontario (CAO), the Sport Development Unit conducts multi-sport workshops to allow coaches to share and learn from experts and each other.
