Written by Veronica Noronha
Svetlana Joukova, a certified level 4 coach, has dedicated her life to coaching and inspiring Rhythmic Gymnastics athletes in Canada and around the world. Throughout her career, she has worked with a wide range of athletes – some as young as five years old – and has also coached athletes who have gone on to become Olympians.
Joukova’s career has taken her around the world. In 1995 she made the decision to immigrate from Russia to Canada where she continued her coaching career. The long list of Joukova’s contributions to Rhythmic Gymnastics in Canada include, coaching a team at the 1998 Youth Games in Moscow, Russia, coaching individual and group at the Four Continents Championship in Curitiba, Brazil (2000), where the team achieved a gold medal, coaching the Canadian Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior Group for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore (Bronze medal) and coaching the Canadian Senior Group (all gymnasts from KALEV Rhythmic Gymnastics Club) for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, UK. In 2015, Joukova coached Patricia Beazzoubenko, Rhythmic Gymnast, at the Pan Am Games where she was awarded an all-around bronze medal. That same year, Joukova was awarded the International Coach of the Year.
Currently, training out of the Markham Pan Am Centre, Joukova is the Head Coach with KALEV Rhythmic Gymnastics where she works with novice, junior and senior high-performance athletes. According to Joukova, training in a high-performance sport complex like the Markham Pan Am Centre is central to the success of Rhythmic Gymnastics athletes. Joukova describes the Markham Pan Am Centre as, “an absolutely amazing sport facility,” and goes on to say, “as a high-performance Gymnasts Coach and Olympian Coach, I’m absolutely happy to train my gymnasts here. It has everything – high ceilings, a beautiful view, world level condition, and beautiful windows so we can see outside.” Joukova also says that the Markham Pan Am Centre offers a professional atmosphere which also stimulate her athletes’ creativity.
It is a well-known fact that behind every successful athlete is a team of people, including coaches, who believe in them. Successful coaches truly dedicate their lives to helping their athletes grow and develop to be the best in their sport. For Joukova, she believes that pushing her athletes to work hard always leads to personal happiness. Joukova says that her, “goal is to bring happiness and passion for the sport to athletes who are up and coming.” Having coached all levels of athletes, her advice is to have patience with yourself and be sure to enjoy every day.
